Man, 20, Remanded For Allegedly Attacking Police Officer

A 20-year-old unemployed man has been remanded into police custody by the Nsuta Circuit Court in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region after pleading guilty to assaulting a police officer during an alleged attempt to free a suspect from detention.

The accused, Kofi Berko, a resident of Juaben, appeared before the court presided over by Simon Nketiah Gagah on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

He pleaded guilty to the charge, prompting the court to remand him into police custody.

The case has been adjourned to September 4, 2026, for conviction and sentencing.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Senu, the complainant, Sergeant Ernest Atta, is stationed at the Juaben Police Station.

The court heard that on August 25, at about 7:30 p.m., Sergeant Atta had completed his shift as the first-out counter NCO and was heading home when he was approached by a man identified as Kwaku Boateng.

Boateng reportedly informed him that a group of young men had attacked police officers at the charge office in an attempt to forcibly release a suspect who had been detained for allegedly stealing.

Sergeant Atta reportedly returned to the station to assist his colleagues and, upon arrival, found Berko, whom the prosecution described as the alleged ringleader, struggling with Constable Kuffour Collins while attempting to force his way into the charge office.

The prosecution said when Sergeant Atta confronted Berko over the alleged mobilisation of about 50 young men to attack the officers, the accused became aggressive and allegedly assaulted him, tearing his shirt in the process.

The District Commander, ASP Samuel Asare, later arrived at the station after being informed about the incident.

According to the prosecution, ASP Asare held Berko by his trousers while explaining the seriousness of his actions to him.

However, Berko allegedly attempted to attack the commander, who was in uniform.

The police officers eventually overpowered him and detained him to facilitate investigations.

A formal complaint was subsequently lodged, and Berko was cautioned and interrogated.

The prosecution told the court that the accused admitted the offence during questioning.

Following his guilty plea, the court remanded him into police custody pending conviction and sentencing on September 4.
