Nine Miners Trapped In Konongo Pit Collapse

Nine miners have been trapped underground following the collapse of a mining pit at Konongo in the Asante-Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening at a mining site belonging to Northern Ashanti Mines while the miners were reportedly working underground.
Reports indicate that the pit suddenly caved in, blocking their exit route and trapping them beneath debris.
Rescue teams, security personnel, officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and fellow miners have since launched efforts to rescue the trapped miners.
The area surrounding the collapsed pit has meanwhile been cordoned off as rescuers work around the clock to reach the victims.
Speaking in an interview with DAILY GUIDE, the Asante-Akyem Central Municipal NADMO Director, Lanbon Joseph, confirmed the incident but disclosed that none of the miners had been rescued as of the time of filing this report.
According to him, the rescue operation remains difficult due to the unstable nature of the ground and the depth of the collapsed section of the pit.
The incident has attracted scores of residents and relatives to the scene, with many anxiously waiting for updates on the fate of the trapped miners.
Authorities are expected to commence investigations into the cause of the collapse after rescue operations are completed.
