Collapsed Bridge Leaves Atwima Mponua Residents Stranded

Residents of Akyantansu, Baakoniaba and surrounding communities in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region are grappling with severe hardship following the collapse of a bridge on the Akyantansu Nkwanta stretch.

The damaged bridge has made the road inaccessible, particularly during heavy rains, as floodwaters submerge the area and cut off movement between communities.

Residents say the situation has disrupted their daily lives and economic activities. According to them, access to nearby Agogoso for market activities has become nearly impossible whenever it rains, while teachers are unable to report to duty.

Farming communities in the area are the worst affected, with large quantities of produce left to rot due to transportation challenges, leading to significant financial losses.

“We are suffering. When it rains, we are completely cut off. Our children cannot go to school, and farmers are losing their livelihoods,” a resident lamented.

Assemblyman for the area, Mr. James Amponsah, popularly known as Teacher, described the situation as worrying, stressing that the collapse of the bridge has had far-reaching consequences.

“This road serves several communities. It affects food supply, education and access to healthcare. The situation needs urgent attention,” he stated.

Residents are therefore calling on government and relevant authorities to as a matter of urgency fix the bridge to restore normal life in the area.
