Kotoko Shatter Chelsea’s 15-Year Home Record with Slim Win

Asante Kotoko forward Albert Amoah etched his name into history on Saturday after scoring the decisive goal that ended Berekum Chelsea’s fifteen-year unbeaten home record at the Golden City Park.

The highly anticipated Ghana Premier League clash lived up to its billing as both sides created chances in a barren first half. Amoah came close to putting the visitors ahead but hesitated at the crucial moment, allowing the Chelsea goalkeeper to collect the ball from his feet. The home side also threatened, with their intricate passing move inside Kotoko’s 18-yard box ending in a strike that rattled the post before Kotoko’s goalkeeper Canara smothered the rebound.

Kotoko returned from the break with renewed intensity after head coach Abdul Karim Zito reshuffled his midfield, introducing Hubert Gyau—signed from Berekum Chelsea—and Walid Neymar Fuseini. The tactical changes paid off as Kotoko took control of the game.

The breakthrough came in the 69th minute when substitute Gyau slipped a clever pass to Amoah, who calmly slotted the ball between the legs of Chelsea’s onrushing goalkeeper to put the Porcupine Warriors ahead.

Berekum Chelsea responded with quick substitutions of their own but could not find an equaliser. Kotoko stood firm to record a famous 1–0 victory, breaking the 15-year jinx of failing to win at the Golden City Park.

In other matches, defending champions Bibiani Gold Stars defeated Bechem United 2–1 at Dunns Park to continue their strong start to the season.

Kotoko’s next league fixture at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium will be postponed, as they prepare to represent Ghana in the CAF Confederation Cup next weekend, while Gold Stars feature in the CAF Champions League.
