Man Gets 5 Years for Stealing Tricycle Loaded with Bread

The Kwadaso Circuit Court has sentenced a 63-year-old trader, Adamu Alhassan, to five years imprisonment for stealing a tricycle and loaves of bread in Kumasi.
Alhassan, who pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing, was convicted on his own plea by the court presided over by His Honour Jephthah Appau.
Presenting the facts of the case, Police Chief Inspector David Opoku Kwabi told the court that the complainant, Oduro Zakaria, is a bread baker residing at Ashtown in Kumasi, while the convict lives at Ahwiaa in the Afigya Kwabere East Municipality.
In February 2024, the complainant loaded 114 loaves of bread valued at GH¢1,680 onto his unregistered tricycle worth GH¢35,000 for delivery to customers at the Adehyeman lorry station. On the way, the tricycle developed a fault, and Alhassan posed as a station master and offered to assist.
Together, they pushed the tricycle to the Kejetia MTN roundabout, where the complainant left it in the convict’s care to find a mechanic. When he returned with the mechanic an hour later, both Alhassan and the tricycle had vanished. The complainant later discovered that the convict was neither a worker nor a station master at the station.
On August 28, 2025, a witness spotted Alhassan at the same station and alerted the complainant, leading to his arrest. He was subsequently handed over to the Ashanti Regional Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU) of the Ghana Police Service.
In his caution statement, Alhassan admitted to the theft. He confessed to selling the tricycle to a scrap dealer at Bremang for GH¢700 and distributing the stolen bread to passers-by.
The court, after considering his plea, convicted him accordingly and sentenced him to five years imprisonment.
