MTN Ghana to Gradually Phase Out 2G and 3G Networks, Prioritizes Smooth Transition to 4G

MTN Ghana has announced plans to gradually phase out its 2G and 3G networks as part of efforts to optimize spectrum and enhance mobile broadband services.
The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Blewett, disclosed this at a press briefing during the Digital Africa Summit in Accra. He emphasized that while 4G coverage is now widely available, a significant number of subscribers still rely on older networks.
“Many of our customers are still operating on 3G. Even though 4G is widely available, some choose to stay on 3G because they feel data usage is better managed on it. Others, however, use older devices that don’t support 4G,” Mr. Blewett explained.
He cautioned that phasing out the legacy networks too quickly could exclude customers who cannot yet afford 4G-enabled devices. “If we push to shut down 2G and 3G without ensuring customers have affordable 4G devices, we risk leaving people behind,” he noted.
The transition, according to MTN Ghana, is expected to deliver faster internet speeds, improved network efficiency, and an enhanced mobile experience for subscribers.
By adopting a gradual and customer-centric approach, the telecom giant says it is determined to ensure that no customer is left behind in the digital shift.
MTN Ghana’s move reflects its broader commitment to delivering innovative and reliable services while keeping pace with global mobile technology trends.
