Decomposed Body Found in Abandoned Galamsey Pit

Fear has gripped residents of Anyaaso in the Bosome Freho District of the Ashanti Region following the discovery of a decomposed body in an abandoned illegal mining (galamsey) pit.

The body, believed to be that of a man in his late 30s, was spotted floating in the pit several days after the incident is suspected to have occurred. Eyewitnesses say a foul stench led to the grim discovery.

“We noticed a strong, unusual smell around the area for days. When we traced it, we were shocked to see a human body in the water,” said Kwame, a local resident who spoke to this reporter.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns over the menace of illegal mining activities and the environmental hazards they leave behind. Abandoned galamsey pits, many left unprotected and unmarked, continue to pose fatal risks to local communities.

Residents and community leaders are now appealing to the Bosome Freho District Assembly, the Environmental Protection Agency, and other relevant authorities to urgently intervene. They are calling for immediate action to fill or fence off such pits and enforce strict measures to regulate illegal mining operations.

Local police have since been notified, and arrangements are underway to retrieve the body and commence further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing cost of unregulated mining on human life and community safety.
