The Ashanti Regional Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has facilitated the recovery of GH¢2.97 million in revenue for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Limited (GWL), while securing GH¢338,452.64 in refunds for consumers wrongly billed or overcharged.

The achievements formed part of the office’s regulatory performance in the third quarter of 2026, ending September, during which it resolved 1,076 out of 1,141 complaints received against the two utility providers.

The resolution rate of 94.3 per cent highlights the Commission’s efforts to protect consumer interests while ensuring the financial sustainability of regulated utility companies.

According to the complaint figures, ECG accounted for 1,090 cases, representing 95.5 per cent of the total, while GWL recorded 51 complaints, representing 4.5 per cent.

Quality of Supply Dominates Complaints

Quality of supply emerged as the leading concern among utility consumers in the Ashanti Region, accounting for 1,072 complaints, representing approximately 94 per cent of all cases received during the period.

Billing issues followed with 38 complaints, while metering recorded 15 cases.

Consumer service delivery accounted for nine complaints, payments four, and unlawful disconnection three.

The figures underscore the importance of effective regulatory oversight in addressing consumer concerns and improving the delivery of essential utility services.

Faulty Poles and Transformers Replaced

Beyond resolving complaints and facilitating financial recoveries, the PURC office recorded improvements in infrastructure and service connections.

It facilitated the replacement of four faulty electricity poles, three defective transformers and one faulty energy meter.

The office also assisted consumers in securing 35 new service connections that had been unduly delayed, bringing relief to affected households and businesses.

WhatsApp Records 236 Complaints

Field activities accounted for the highest number of complaints received by the Commission, with 810 cases recorded during the quarter.

The office’s WhatsApp platforms generated 236 complaints, while 37 cases were lodged through walk-in visits.

Consumer Service Committees accounted for 26 complaints, written submissions recorded 18, and telephone calls accounted for 14 cases.

The Ashanti Regional Manager of PURC, Mr. Edward Boduah, attributed the office’s performance to proactive regulatory interventions undertaken during the period.

He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring reliable, safe and high-quality electricity and water services across the Ashanti Region.

The Commission’s interventions are aimed at strengthening accountability among utility providers, addressing consumer grievances and promoting improved service delivery throughout the region.
