Grandma In Police Custody Over Alleged Burial Of Newborn Baby

A 47-year-old woman, identified as Akua Abrokwaa, has been arrested and detained by the Police at Akim Oda in the Eastern Region over the alleged burial of her newborn grandchild.

The disturbing incident occurred at Akoroso, a community near Koforidua, shortly after the suspect’s daughter delivered the baby on Sunday.

The incident reportedly came to light after some residents became suspicious and alerted the traditional authorities.

Speaking to Swiftnews3, the Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Kofi Quainoo Stephenas, said the matter was first reported to the chief, who summoned Akua Abrokwaa to appear before him.

He said the suspect allegedly refused to honour the chief’s invitation, compelling the authorities to escalate the matter and report it to the Police.

A video sighted by Swiftnews3 showed the suspect in handcuffs leading Police personnel and some community members to a location where the newborn was allegedly buried.

The group was seen digging the ground to retrieve the baby, after which the newborn was reportedly removed and placed in a cardboard box.

Hon. Stephenas confirmed that both Akua Abrokwaa and her daughter are currently in Police custody at Oda, assisting with investigations.

He said the Police were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged burial and determine what happened to the newborn.

The Police are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case, including whether the baby was alive at the time it was allegedly buried.

The incident has left residents of Akoroso shocked, with community members calling for a thorough investigation into the matter.
