Two Suspected Robbers Killed In Police Shootouts On Atebubu–Ejura Highway

Two suspected armed robbers have been shot dead in separate police operations linked to a string of attacks along the Atebubu–Ejura Highway.

The deceased have been identified as Oman Amandu, also known as Manu, and an unidentified accomplice believed to be part of a robbery gang that has been terrorising motorists on the stretch.

According to a police situational report, the first incident occurred on March 18, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m., when personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) Headquarters, acting on intelligence, proceeded from Atebubu to Ejura to arrest a suspect at his hideout.

The suspect, described as a notorious armed robber, had been linked to an earlier attack on March 14, 2026, during which unknown assailants fired into a moving vehicle on the highway, leaving a passenger injured.

Police said the suspect attempted to resist arrest by pulling out a single-barrelled gun to engage the team. The officers responded, shooting him in the process.

He was rushed to the Atebubu Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Items retrieved from him included a single-barrelled gun, five live cartridges, GH¢200 in cash and a Tecno Pop 10 mobile phone.

In a separate operation on March 25, 2026, at about 11:10 p.m., PID personnel on routine patrol encountered a group of about five suspected robbers near Kasei along the same highway.

The suspects, armed with an AK-47 rifle, single-barrelled guns, machetes and sticks, reportedly attempted to stop an unmarked police vehicle using flashlights before opening fire.

The police team returned fire, leading to a shootout during which one suspect was hit while the others fled into the bush.

The injured suspect was conveyed to the Atebubu Government Hospital but was also pronounced dead on arrival.

A search conducted on him led to the retrieval of one single-barrelled gun, five live cartridges, two spent cartridges, six live AK-47 rounds, two spent AK-47 ammunition, multiple mobile phones, a machete, GH¢310 in cash and other items.

Police say efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects who escaped.
