Six-Year-Old Completes Life-Changing Surgery Journey at KATH

A six-year-old boy, Hanan Abdullah, has successfully completed a series of life-saving surgeries at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), marking the end of a challenging four-year medical journey.
Hanan’s ordeal began at the age of two when he accidentally ingested a toxic substance, locally known as “Parazo” or “Akashaa,” while playing at home. The incident caused severe damage to his throat, leaving him unable to eat normally and forcing doctors to rely on a feeding tube connected to his stomach for his survival.
Medical specialists at the hospital carried out three separate surgeries over the years to stabilise his condition. However, the final and most critical procedure was delayed due to his young age and fragile health at the time.
After years of careful monitoring and preparation, doctors finally deemed him strong enough to undergo the last operation, which has now been successfully performed.
The cost of the surgeries, estimated at about $27,000, was fully covered by the Member of Parliament for Tamale South and Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, whose intervention ensured the continuity of Hanan’s treatment.
On March 25, 2026, a representative of the Minister, Hajia Rafia Nagumsi, visited the hospital to settle the outstanding medical expenses related to the final procedure.
Hanan is currently receiving care at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the hospital as he begins his recovery.
Family members have expressed profound gratitude to the Minister for his unwavering support throughout the boy’s treatment. They have also appealed to the public for prayers, expressing hope that Hanan will soon regain the ability to eat normally after years of depending on tube feeding.
