19 Nabbed in Kumasi Drug Bust

Nineteen (19) persons have been arrested by the IGP Special Operations Team in the Ashanti Region for their alleged involvement in the sale of hard drugs.

The suspects were picked up during an intelligence-led operation at Alabar and “Thinker Mu”, suburbs in Manhyia South in Kumasi. The areas are known to be the abode of such suspects and are widely regarded as hotspots for drug peddling and substance abuse.

The operation, led by DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil and ASP Samuel Mustapha Abenzuo, first led to the arrest of a female shop operator. A search conducted on her premises uncovered quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Eighteen (18) additional suspects were subsequently rounded up, bringing the total number of arrests to nineteen (19).

Police retrieved quantities of white substances suspected to be heroin or cocaine, dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp, opioids, and other items commonly used in drug consumption.

The arrests followed a routine patrol by the special team aimed at clamping down on criminal activities within the Kumasi metropolis.

The operation targeted crimes such as robbery, stealing, rape, violent attacks on commuters and other road users, as well as drug peddling and the sale and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.

In all, one hundred and eleven (111) personnel were deployed for the exercise, supported by ten (10) service vehicles, including a Black Maria.

The suspects are currently in custody at the Suntreso Police District Headquarters, assisting police with investigations, while the seized exhibits have been handed over for forensic analysis.
