Haruna Iddrisu Funds $27,000 Surgery for Child at KATH

The Member of Parliament for Tamale North and Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has once again demonstrated compassion by sponsoring a fourth life-saving surgery for a six-year-old boy at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
The latest procedure, carried out on March 25, 2026, is estimated to cost $27,000 (approximately GH¢300,000), bringing relief to the family of Abdula Hannan, who has battled a severe medical condition for the past four years.
The child reportedly suffered serious internal injuries at the age of two after accidentally ingesting a corrosive soda-based chemical while playing at home. Since then, he has undergone three separate surgeries as doctors worked to stabilise his condition ahead of the final corrective procedure.
Medical specialists at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital closely monitored his progress and delayed the final surgery until he reached an appropriate age for the complex intervention.
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, upon learning of the boy’s condition, stepped in to support the family and has since financed all four surgeries, in addition to pledging continued assistance towards the child’s recovery.
Speaking to journalists at the hospital, a representative of the Minister, Hajia Rafia Nagumsi, disclosed that the MP encountered the family by chance and immediately offered help.
“Since that day, the little boy has undergone three successful surgeries under the sponsorship of Hon. Haruna Iddrisu. The fourth surgery, which is taking place today, costs about $27,000,” she stated.
She further noted that the Minister remains committed to supporting post-surgery care to enable the child to regain the ability to eat normally.
Currently, the boy is being fed through a surgically created opening in his stomach, a condition he has lived with for four years.
Hajia Rafia Nagumsi also cautioned parents to be vigilant and keep hazardous substances out of the reach of children, describing the incident as preventable.
“This unfortunate incident highlights the dangers of leaving harmful chemicals within reach of children,” she warned.
The boy’s parents, Abdula Ibrahim Antwi and Seidu Kashifa, expressed profound gratitude to the MP for his timely intervention.
“Without Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, we would not have been able to afford our son’s medical care,” the father said, adding that as small-scale farmers, their income could not support such expensive treatment.
He explained that their son was initially treated in Tamale before being referred to other facilities, including Tachiman Holy Family Hospital, and later to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for specialised care.
The boy’s mother, overcome with emotion, described the Minister as a “saviour” and appealed to the public to appreciate his generosity.
“I don’t know how to thank him. Wherever you see Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, please thank him on our behalf,” she said.
The surgery is expected to significantly improve the child’s condition and restore his ability to eat independently.
