Police Disrupt Robbery Gang on Obuasi–Dunkwa Highway, Four Arrested

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has disrupted a suspected armed robbery gang operating along the Obuasi–Dunkwa highway following intelligence-led operations conducted between March 10 and March 11.
Police said the operation was carried out after receiving information that a group of armed men had assembled in a bush near Obuasi to plan a robbery attack on motorists using the highway.
At about 11:00 a.m. on March 10, police officers moved to the area and encountered four armed suspects. Upon seeing the officers, the suspects reportedly opened fire, leading to an exchange of gunshots.
During the shootout, two of the suspects were fatally wounded while the other two escaped into the bush with gunshot injuries.
Further follow-up operations by the police led to the arrest of six suspects believed to be linked to the robbery gang. The operation also uncovered a wider illegal arms supply network in the Asawase area.
Police retrieved several weapons and ammunition during the operation. These include an AK-47 rifle with serial number 68104599 loaded with 28 rounds of 7.62×39 mm ammunition, as well as a pump-action gun with five BB cartridges.
Officers also recovered eight additional rounds of 7.62×39 mm ammunition and one spent BB cartridge, bringing the total number of ammunition seized to 36 rounds.
The Ashanti South Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent Stephen Antwi, said the police will intensify intelligence-led operations to combat armed robbery and the circulation of illegal firearms in the country.
He assured the public that the police remain committed to protecting lives and property, especially along major highways in the region.
