KMA Begins Removal of Traders Dealing in Explosive Materials at Kejetia Market

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), together with the Board and Management of the Kumasi Kejetia Market, has commenced an operation to remove traders selling combustible and explosive substances from the market.
The exercise is part of renewed efforts to prevent frequent fire outbreaks that have, over the years, destroyed shops and goods worth thousands of Ghana cedis. Authorities have identified chemicals such as carbide as major fire hazards within the market enclave.
Although affected traders were given up to Sunday, March 1, 2026, to vacate the facility, some reportedly failed to comply, prompting the Assembly to enforce the directive.
The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, who also serves as Chairman of the Market Board, said the Assembly will not sit unconcerned and allow another devastating fire to occur at the busy trading hub.
Popularly known as King Zuba, he stressed that the operation will continue until all traders dealing in potentially fire-triggering chemicals are removed from the market.
He directed the affected traders to register with the Ghana National Fire Service desk at the KMA to secure relocation space at the Racecourse Market, where temporary arrangements are being put in place pending the construction of permanent containers.
The Mayor also advised traders operating near key installations, especially fire hydrants and pavements, to relocate to avoid obstructing emergency access routes.
Meanwhile, the Combined Kumasi Kejetia and Central Market Traders Association has expressed support for the Assembly’s action.
The Association’s Secretary, Reuben Amey, stated that the safety of the majority of traders must not be compromised by a few individuals and urged full cooperation with authorities to safeguard the market.
