10 Killed In Manso Tontokrom Galamsey Tragedy

Ten illegal miners have been confirmed dead following a tragic mine pit collapse at Manso Tontokrom in the Ashanti Region over the weekend.

About 30 others are said to be in critical condition after the illegal mining pit caved in while they were reportedly working underground. An unspecified number of persons are also believed to be trapped beneath the debris as rescue operations continue.

The injured have been admitted to Hwidiem Hospital and are currently receiving medical attention. Authorities are yet to release official details regarding the exact cause of the collapse and the total number of miners involved in the illegal operation.

Galamsey Still A Threat

The incident has once again brought to the fore the dangers associated with illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. The activity continues to pose serious environmental, social and security challenges across the country.

Several water bodies, including the Offin River and the Pra River, have suffered severe pollution due to the indiscriminate use of harmful chemicals such as mercury in gold processing.

Aside from environmental destruction, galamsey operations are often carried out without adherence to safety standards, leading to frequent accidents and loss of lives. Deep, unprotected pits and weak tunnels make cave-ins a common occurrence, especially during the rainy season.

Despite ongoing government and security interventions to clamp down on illegal mining, the practice persists, largely driven by unemployment and the lure of quick financial gains.

The Manso Tontokrom disaster serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for intensified enforcement of mining regulations and the creation of alternative livelihoods to curb the growing menace.
