Nkawie Police Torch Galamsey Equipment at Afipaye

The Ghana Police Service has stepped up its crackdown on illegal mining activities, with the Nkawie Divisional Police Command carrying out a decisive operation at Afipaye in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
The operation, led by ASP Noah Yakpah, targeted illegal mining sites operating along the River Offin on Friday, February 20. Several mining machines and temporary wooden structures believed to have been used for galamsey activities were destroyed and set ablaze during the exercise.
Police sources say the move forms part of renewed efforts to combat the growing threat of illegal mining, which continues to wreak havoc on the country’s water bodies and forest reserves. The destruction of the equipment is expected to serve as a strong warning to individuals involved in the unlawful trade.
Illegal mining has in recent years caused extensive pollution of major rivers, including the Offin, leaving many communities struggling with access to clean and safe drinking water. Farmlands have also been degraded, affecting agricultural production and livelihoods.
Environmental stakeholders have repeatedly cautioned that the persistent destruction of natural resources could have long-term consequences for public health and national development if urgent measures are not sustained.
The Nkawie Divisional Police Command has therefore appealed to residents to support the fight against galamsey by providing credible information to security agencies. The police have assured the public that similar operations will continue in other affected communities to safeguard the environment and protect water resources for future generations.
