Mystery Death at Manso Galamsey Site: Police Arrest Two

The body of a 29-year-old Nigerian miner, Baba Jedi, has been discovered drowned near an illegal mining (galamsey) site at Manso Fawotrikyɛ in the Amansie South District, raising fresh concerns about safety and criminal activities linked to galamsey operations.
The deceased was found on Friday, February 6, 2026, days after he was reported missing. Information gathered indicates that Baba Jedi had informed the site master, Tahiru, that he was leaving the mining site after work. However, another worker later revealed that the deceased was allegedly picked up on a motorcycle by the site master, after which he went missing.
Following the discovery of the body, the Manso Adubia Police Command moved swiftly and arrested the site master and one other co-worker to assist in investigations. Police say they are working to establish the exact circumstances that led to the miner’s death.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing dangers associated with galamsey activities in the Ashanti Region. Illegal mining sites, often operating outside regulatory control, have become prone to accidents, violent disputes and unexplained deaths, in addition to causing severe environmental degradation.
Residents of Manso Fawotrikyɛ have expressed worry over the recurring galamsey-related incidents and are urging authorities to step up enforcement efforts to curb illegal mining and protect lives within affected communities.
Police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that anyone found responsible will be brought to book. The body of the deceased has been deposited for further examination as part of the ongoing probe.
