Two Suspected Armed Gold Robbers Grabbed

Two suspected armed robbers have been arrested after allegedly attacking and extorting a miner at Amanchia in the Atwima Nwabiagya South District of the Ashanti Region.
The suspects, identified as Ernest Opoku, popularly known as “Bobolinking,” and Frank Owusu, also known as “One Blood,” were arrested by police from the Nkawie Command following a distress call from the victim, Awaka Stephen Abanga.
According to Mr. Abanga, the suspects, together with about 15 accomplices, stormed his mining site at about 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 31, 2026, and demanded gold worth GH¢300,000.
He explained that the suspects first arrived at the site and met his workers, who later informed him of their presence.
“My workers called to inform me that some people were at my site looking for me. When I arrived, they demanded that I surrender my gold and all the cash I had,” he stated.
Mr. Abanga said when he questioned their identity, the group attacked him with machetes, causing injuries to his hands, and bolted with the gold.
The victim subsequently reported the incident to the Nkawie Police, where he was issued a police medical form to seek treatment at a health facility.
He further revealed that he informed his father, who resides in Bawku, about the incident, and was assured that the attackers would soon be arrested.
Mr. Abanga stated that the suspects returned to his mining site again on Monday, February 2, 2026, demanding money from him.
According to him, the suspects once again met his workers, who called him to the site. Upon his arrival, the two suspects allegedly threatened him to leave the community if he wanted to remain alive.
Sensing danger, Mr. Abanga secretly sent a message to the Nkawie Police Command.
Police officers led by ASP Noah Yakpe quickly responded and arrested the two suspects at the scene.
The suspects are currently assisting police with investigations, while efforts are underway to arrest other accomplices believed to be on the run.
Sources indicate that the suspects have since been transferred to the Ashanti Regional Police Command in Kumasi for further investigations.
