Mpasatia Community Holds Clean-Up Exercise to Promote Environmental Sanitation

Residents of Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, January 22, 2026, came together for a community clean-up exercise aimed at promoting environmental sanitation and public health.
The exercise was spearheaded by the Nana Mmerantɛɛhene of Mpasatia, Nana Osei Asibey, with active participation from community members, youth groups, and opinion leaders. The initiative formed part of ongoing efforts to maintain cleanliness and preserve the natural environment of the area.
Addressing residents during the exercise, Nana Osei Asibey cautioned against indiscriminate littering, particularly around and within rivers and streams in the community. He warned that anyone found polluting water bodies or dumping refuse indiscriminately would be sanctioned in accordance with the law. According to him, protecting water sources is critical, as polluted rivers pose serious health risks and threaten livelihoods that depend on clean water.
He stressed that environmental cleanliness is not only a cultural responsibility but also a legal and moral obligation, urging residents to adopt proper waste disposal practices to prevent the outbreak of sanitation-related diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever.
The Assembly Member for the Mpasatia Electoral Area, Hon. Karim Salifu, also used the occasion to call on all residents to actively participate in subsequent clean-up exercises. He warned that residents who fail to attend future exercises without valid reasons would be dealt with in accordance with district sanitation by-laws.
Hon. Salifu emphasized that community development and cleanliness go hand in hand, noting that a clean environment contributes to good health, attracts development projects, and enhances the overall quality of life. He urged residents to see the clean-up exercise as a collective responsibility rather than the duty of a few individuals.
Environmental experts have long highlighted that regular community clean-up activities help reduce waste accumulation, prevent flooding caused by choked drains, and protect ecosystems from degradation. In rural communities like Mpasatia, such initiatives also play a vital role in safeguarding farmlands and water bodies from pollution.
The Mpasatia clean-up exercise ended successfully, with community leaders reaffirming their commitment to sustaining sanitation efforts and encouraging continuous community involvement to ensure a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment for present and future generations.
