Police Destroy Illicit Drugs Worth Millions in Ashanti Region

The Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region has destroyed large quantities of illicit and sex-enhancing drugs valued at millions of Ghana cedis.

The drugs, which included Tramadol, Hyergra 200, Indian hemp and Benylin Codeine, were destroyed on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, following the completion of investigations and court processes.

Speaking after the exercise, the Station Officer of the unit, Inspector Nkrumah, revealed that dozens of suspects had been arrested in connection with the seized drugs and have since been arraigned before court.

He explained that some of the drugs were seized last year, while others were confiscated earlier this year, adding that the law permits their destruction once all legal requirements are met.

Inspector Nkrumah attributed the arrests to sustained intelligence-led operations across the Ashanti Region and cautioned drug dealers that the police remain resolute in clamping down on the illegal trade.

He further warned that the law provides for severe punishment for drug peddlers, assuring the public that the police would ensure all offenders are prosecuted. He also advised the youth and traders to stay away from drugs and any activities linked to their distribution.
