Curfew Renewed for Nkwanta Township as Government Tightens Security Measures

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has renewed the curfew imposed on Nkwanta Township and its surrounding communities in the Nkwanta South Municipality.
The decision, taken on the advice of the Oti Regional Security Council and enforced through an Executive Instrument, extends the curfew hours from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am, effective Monday, January 19, 2026.
A statement signed by the Minister said the measure forms part of ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security in the area following recent disturbances.
Government has once again appealed to Chiefs, opinion leaders, the youth, and residents of the affected communities to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could escalate tensions. Citizens are encouraged to channel their grievances through peaceful and lawful means to help restore lasting calm.
Meanwhile, authorities have imposed a total ban on the carrying of arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons within Nkwanta Township and its environs. Security agencies have been directed to strictly enforce the directive, and any person found in possession of weapons or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.
The Interior Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working with local leaders and security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property in the municipality.
