Blue Water Guards Begin Operations in Obuasi

The Obuasi Municipal Assembly has welcomed a newly deployed team of Blue Water Guards tasked with protecting rivers and streams within the municipality from pollution associated with illegal mining activities.

The deployment forms part of government’s broader strategy to safeguard Ghana’s water resources by halting the destruction of river bodies through unlawful mining and other environmentally harmful practices.

Upon arrival, the Guards paid a courtesy call on the Obuasi Municipal Assembly to officially introduce themselves and notify the Assembly of the start of their operational duties.

During the meeting with the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kannin, and senior management staff of the Assembly, the Blue Water Guards outlined their mandate, which includes enforcing laws that prohibit mining and other destructive activities in and around water bodies.

They assured the Assembly of their readiness to work professionally and decisively to protect rivers from further degradation.

In her remarks, the Municipal Chief Executive pledged the Assembly’s cooperation and logistical support to enhance the effectiveness of the Guards’ operations. She noted that protecting water resources requires a coordinated approach involving state institutions, traditional authorities and local communities.

Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kannin commended the government and the President for intensifying the fight against illegal mining and placing high priority on the preservation of Ghana’s rivers and streams.

She further urged residents of Obuasi to assist the Blue Water Guards by volunteering information on illegal mining and any activities that threaten water bodies in the municipality, stressing that community support is key to the success of the initiative.
