Court Jails Woman 15 Months for Child Assault

A Circuit Court in Tafo, Kumasi, has sentenced a 34-year-old Nigerian national, Beauty Alakwe, to 15 months’ imprisonment with hard labour for physically assaulting her nine-year-old daughter at Duase near Kenyasi in the Ashanti Region.

The conviction, which was handed down on December 23, 2025, also included a fine of GH¢6,000. Alakwe, however, failed to pay the fine and has subsequently been committed to the Kumasi Central Prisons to serve her custodial sentence.

Police sources disclosed that Alakwe was arrested on November 22, 2025, after a resident of Duase reported the incident to authorities. The case was investigated by the Kenyasi District Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) before being forwarded to court.

In a statement, the Ashanti Regional Police Command praised the public for their vigilance and cooperation, noting that such support plays a crucial role in combating domestic violence and child abuse.

The Command also issued a strong warning against mob justice, urging the public to allow the law to take its course in all criminal matters.

Meanwhile, the court has directed the Department of Social Welfare to take steps to safeguard the welfare of the child and facilitate her reunification with family members in Nigeria.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons, encouraging the public to report all suspected cases of abuse for swift action.
