Kuapa Kokoo Rolls Out €450k Development Projects Across Juaben and Asante Akim North

The Kuapa Kokoo Farmers Union (KKFU) has launched major development projects worth €450,000 across selected communities in the Juaben Municipality and the Asante Akim North Municipality.

The initiative, funded under the Fairtrade-supported “Way To Go Project,” includes the construction of classroom blocks and maternity units designed to address critical education and healthcare needs in rural cocoa-growing communities.

Sod-cutting ceremonies were held in Asenkyem, Nyankoma, Bomfa, and Foase—communities identified through extensive consultations as having urgent infrastructural challenges.

Speaking during the ceremonies, James Agyekum Kwarteng, President of KKFU, reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to improving the welfare of cocoa farmers through fair trade and community development. He called on traditional leaders and opinion leaders to help mobilize more farmers into the Union.

“Kuapa Kokoo has served cocoa farmers for over 30 years and remains the only indigenous licensed buying company. We are appealing to government to support indigenous LBCs so we can compete effectively with foreign companies and purchase cocoa promptly from farmers,” he said.

Project Details

According to Clinton Donkor Sarkodie, Deputy Project Coordinator for KKFU’s Way To Go Project, the selected communities fall within the Juaben Municipality and Asante Akim North. He explained that after assessments, education and healthcare emerged as top priorities, leading to the choice of the four project sites.

The projects include:

Asenkyem (Asante Akim North): Construction of a fully furnished six-unit classroom block with a headmaster’s office, staff common room, library, and ICT laboratory.

Nyankoma (Asante Akim North): Construction of a six-unit classroom block with a 12-seater toilet facility.

Bomfa (Juaben Municipality): Construction of a maternity unit at the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Centre.

Ofoase (Juaben Municipality): Construction of a maternity unit to support improved maternal and child healthcare.

Construction is scheduled to begin in December 2025 and is expected to be completed within six months. KKFU will hand over the facilities to the communities after completion, with periodic supervision to support maintenance practices.

MCE and Health Officials Praise KKFU

At the Bomfa ceremony, Eunice Ohenewa Ansu, MCE for Juaben Municipality, expressed deep appreciation for KKFU’s intervention, describing it as a major boost for vulnerable farming communities.

“Juaben is an orphan municipality with numerous developmental needs. We thank Kuapa Kokoo for this support and continue to appeal to other investors to partner with us,” she said. She pledged to promote KKFU and ensure that Bomfa receives its fair share of development.

The Juaben Municipal Disease Control Officer, Isaac Boakye Afrifa, also welcomed the initiative, noting that health workers had long struggled to secure a suitable place for Child Welfare Clinics.

“This maternity unit will ease the burden on our staff and greatly enhance healthcare delivery,” he said.

Traditional authorities, including Nana Abena Afranoa III, Hwidiem Hemaa, and Nana Yaw Danso, Adontenhene of Bomfa, commended KKFU for the historic projects and assured full support toward maintaining the facilities.

Asante Akim North Shows Gratitude

In Asante Akim North, MCE Sarah Amoakoa applauded Kuapa Kokoo for choosing the municipality as a beneficiary and promised to ensure proper monitoring of the projects until completion.

Communities Celebrate Long-Awaited Development

Residents across the beneficiary communities expressed excitement and relief, noting that the projects will improve access to quality education for children and strengthen healthcare delivery for mothers and infants.

With the rollout of these Fairtrade-funded projects, Kuapa Kokoo Farmers Union continues to demonstrate its long-standing commitment to transforming the lives of cocoa farmers and supporting rural development across Ghana.
