VIDEO: Obuasi Stands Still as MCE Bids Mother Farewell

Obuasi came to a standstill on Saturday, November 30, as thousands of mourners thronged the AGA School Park to support the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kanin, during the final funeral rites of her late mother, Madam Lucy Yaa Amankwah.

The ceremony drew a powerful mix of political leaders, traditional authorities, media personnel, and ordinary residents, turning the funeral into one of the biggest social events recorded in the municipality this year.

Among the top dignitaries who graced the occasion was the Kumasi Mayor, Hon. Richard Agyemang Boadi, popularly known as King Zuba, whose presence electrified the crowd. He was joined by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, Nana Akwasi, who led a strong party delegation to support the bereaved MCE.

Former Attorney-General Betty Mould Iddrisu received a warm welcome upon arrival, while Hon. Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, also attended with party supporters from Accra.

Also present were several Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) from across the Ashanti Region, who came in solidarity to mourn with their colleague. Their participation further highlighted the high regard in which the MCE and her late mother are held within government circles.

In addition to the political heavyweights, the event drew a remarkable presence of chiefs and queen mothers from far and near, who came adorned in rich traditional regalia to pay their respects. Their attendance added cultural elegance and affirmed the late Madam Amankwah’s strong ties with traditional leadership.

The funeral saw heavy media coverage, as journalists from various radio stations, newspapers, and online platforms converged at the venue to capture every moment of the grand ceremony.

Madam Lucy Yaa Amankwah, who passed away on July 17, 2025, was celebrated as a woman of dignity, compassion, and deep community influence. Emotional tributes from family, friends, and church members highlighted her enduring legacy and impact on the people of Obuasi.

Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kanin extended heartfelt appreciation to all dignitaries, traditional leaders, media personnel, political figures, and residents who stood by her family throughout the mourning period. A Thanksgiving Service held the following day at Pillar of Faith Ministries concluded the solemn weekend.

The funeral, marked by unity, culture, and massive public support, will be remembered as one of Obuasi’s most significant social gatherings of the year.
