HEPA Plus CEO Commended by Malawian Herbal Medicine Delegation

Dr. Ebenezer Agyemang, CEO of HEPA Plus under Ebenage Herbal Production & Consult, has received high commendation from a delegation of herbal medicine experts from the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) in Malawi, following the completion of their study visit to Ghana.

Ebenage Herbal Production & Consult, producers of leading herbal medicines such as HEPA Plus, Pavi and Plasmox, was described by the delegation as a model institution demonstrating excellence in herbal medicine production, organic cultivation, and strict adherence to quality standards.

Speaking after the visit, the delegation leader, Dr. John Mponda, praised Dr. Agyemang for his strong leadership and commitment to advancing herbal medicine through best practices.

“We cannot talk about herbal medicine products without focusing on the source of their raw materials. Quality depends heavily on where the materials come from, and the standards under Dr. Agyemang’s leadership are exceptionally high,” Dr. Mponda said.

He noted that while many herbal producers across Africa struggle with issues such as ingredient substitution and poor quality control, HEPA Plus stands out for its strict compliance with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). The company operates a large organic medicinal plant farm, ensuring that its flagship products—HEPA Plus, Pavi and Plasmox—are cultivated without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

The farm also has irrigation systems to guarantee plant growth even in harsh weather conditions, a key factor in maintaining consistent product quality. Dr. Mponda stressed that these practices ensure safer, more reliable herbal medicines for consumers.

He added that the company’s adherence to Good Agricultural and Manufacturing Practices (GAMP) makes it an excellent learning model for students and for countries like Malawi working to develop a stronger herbal medicine industry.

The Malawian delegation’s visit to HEPA Plus formed part of a broader mission to benchmark Ghana’s progress in traditional and herbal medicine. The team also held meetings with officials at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to study its Bachelor of Science in Herbal Medicine programme, with the intention of strengthening Malawi’s curriculum.

Dr. Mponda further noted that Ghana continues to lead Africa in herbal medicine regulation, training and product development, making it a key reference point for countries setting up their own structures and legislation.

The delegation also visited the Centre for Plant Medicine Research, where they expressed interest in long-term partnerships in training, research, quality control and the cultivation of medicinal plants.

He concluded that the growth of Africa’s herbal medicine industry relies heavily on collaboration, knowledge sharing and learning from institutions such as HEPA Plus that are already setting high standards.
