Joint Security Operation Nets Over 300 Suspects in Obuasi Galamsey Crackdown

A joint military-police operation has led to the arrest of more than 300 suspects in a major anti-illegal mining crackdown in the Ashanti Region.

The coordinated exercise, conducted by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the Ghana Police Service, targeted three communities—Anwona, Nhyieaso, and Dadwen—all near Obuasi. The suspects, mostly males, were rounded up and transported to the Patasi Police Depot in Kumasi for screening and further investigations.

According to the Armed Forces, the swoop was part of an intelligence-led operation aimed at apprehending individuals connected to the recent violent attack on members of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS). The incident also involved assaults on police officers, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials, and journalists who were carrying out their lawful duties.

Addressing the media, the Director-General in charge of Technical at the Ghana Police Service, COP Dr. Sayibu Gariba, explained that the operation, which commenced on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, forms part of broader efforts to clamp down on illegal mining and ensure the safety of state operatives.

He warned that anyone found obstructing the work of security agencies or engaging in illegal mining would “face the full force of the law.”

Residents of the affected communities have been urged to remain calm and go about their normal activities. Authorities have assured the public that the operation is a safety measure, not a cause for fear or alarm.

The security agencies have reiterated their commitment to restoring law and order while safeguarding the country’s natural resources from illegal exploitation.
