KMA Taskforce Arrests 30 Drivers for Charging Unapproved Fares at Night

A joint security taskforce of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has impounded 30 commercial vehicles and arrested their drivers for allegedly charging unapproved transport fares at night.

The operation, conducted at Santasi, followed numerous complaints from passengers about exorbitant fares being charged by drivers operating in the area.

According to reports, the approved fare from Santasi to Ahenema Kokobeng is GH₵3, but some drivers were allegedly charging as high as GH₵10, inconveniencing passengers who rely on their services, especially at night.

Leader of the taskforce, Sergeant Sampson Dadzie, disclosed to the media that all the arrested drivers would be arraigned before court for prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others.

He emphasized that the KMA would continue to enforce transport regulations to ensure sanity in the metropolis, particularly during night hours when passengers are most vulnerable.

Some passengers who spoke to Adom News commended the security taskforce for the swift intervention, noting that the situation had become unbearable in recent weeks.

“They take advantage of us at night when cars are few. Sometimes we are forced to pay any amount they demand because we have no option,” one passenger lamented.

The operation, according to KMA officials, forms part of a broader exercise to clamp down on lawlessness and ensure compliance with approved transport fares within the Kumasi Metropolis.

The taskforce comprised personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the military, and officers of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.
