Five Feared Dead, Eleven Injured in Atwedie Crash
A fatal road accident at Atwedie, a community near Konongo in the Ashanti Region, has claimed the lives of at least five people and left eleven others battling for their lives.
The accident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, October 25, 2025, involved a Sprinter bus with registration number GR 6626-22 that crashed into a stationary tipper truck parked along the Kumasi–Accra Highway.
Eyewitnesses say the speeding Sprinter was negotiating a curve when the driver suddenly came face-to-face with the parked truck and crashed into it. The collision left the front of the bus completely wrecked, trapping some passengers inside.
According to one eyewitness, rescue operations by officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) lasted nearly two hours before all the trapped victims were pulled out.
“It was a terrifying sight. Two passengers seated in front were completely pinned down by the wreckage. The firefighters worked tirelessly to rescue them,” the witness said, adding that several victims appeared lifeless at the scene.
Personnel from the GNFS and the police were on hand to manage the situation and direct traffic, which had built up on the busy highway following the incident.
The injured passengers have been transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, while authorities have commenced investigations to ascertain the exact cause of the crash.
Meanwhile, the GNFS has reiterated its call for motorists to observe road safety regulations and avoid excessive speeding, particularly along the Kumasi–Accra stretch, which has become notorious for fatal accidents.
