VIDEOS: Eight Illegal Miners Nabbed at Pakyi No. 1

Police in the Asokwa Division have arrested eight individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining (galamsey) activities at Pakyi Kaniago, in the Atwima District.

The suspects were picked up during a two-hour operation on Sunday, August 31, along River Nwere, River Abufunu, and River Akai, where they were found mining with chanfan machines. Several others, however, managed to escape when police moved in.

Items retrieved from the site included eight motorbikes, multiple pumping machines, and one excavator. Police say the equipment was being used to support illegal operations that have caused extensive damage to the environment.

Cocoa Farms and Rivers Affected

Community members told the press that more than 10 acres of cocoa farms have been destroyed as a result of the activities. The three rivers in the area have also been heavily polluted, raising fears about the long-term impact on water quality and agriculture.

“This destruction is disheartening. Our farms are gone and the rivers are no longer safe,” a resident lamented.

Police Action and Next Steps

The Asokwa Divisional Police Commander, DCOP Rev. Nyamekye Adani Ameyaw, confirmed the arrests and disclosed that a docket has already been forwarded to the Ashanti Regional Police Command. Police sources further indicated that charge sheets have been prepared, and the suspects will soon be arraigned before court.

Residents Appeal for Intervention

While some residents declined to comment publicly for fear of reprisals from illegal miners, others openly blamed the traditional leadership of the area, particularly the Chief of Pakyi No. 1, Nana Poku Owusu Ababio II, for allegedly failing to act.

The residents have also appealed to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to intervene and save their farmlands and water bodies from further destruction.

The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
