Mahama Fires Chief Justice Torkornoo After Misconduct Findings

In a dramatic shake-up of Ghana’s judiciary, President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo after a constitutional committee upheld claims of misconduct against her.

The decision, announced in a statement signed by Government Communications Minister Felix Ofosu, takes immediate effect. It follows a petition filed by Ghanaian citizen Daniel Ofori, whose concerns were investigated by a committee under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution.

The committee ruled that Justice Torkornoo was guilty of “stated misbehaviour” under Article 146(1) and formally recommended her removal. President Mahama, bound by Article 146(9), executed the decision without delay.

The unprecedented dismissal is already sending ripples through the legal and political community, as Justice Torkornoo becomes the first Chief Justice in Ghana’s history to be removed under this constitutional process.
