Kumasi Central Prison Reaches Out to Children’s Home

The Kumasi Central Prison has taken its rebranding campaign beyond the prison yard with a clean-up exercise and donations to the Kumasi Children’s Home.
The outreach, held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, forms part of the prison’s year-long “Think Prison 360 Degrees” initiative, designed to strengthen community ties and change negative perceptions about the service.
Speaking at the event, Ashanti Regional Commander of Prisons, Ing. James B. Mwinyelle, described both prisons and children’s homes as “total institutions” where residents share common experiences. He said the gesture was meant to show that even with their own challenges, prisons could extend a hand to society.
“We decided to come here not only to clean the environment but also to donate to these children. Though prisons have needs, we believe in sharing with others. That is the spirit behind this initiative,” he explained.
He further urged the public to end the stigma associated with both ex-convicts and children in care institutions, stressing that how they are treated today will influence the kind of society built tomorrow.
Among the items presented were tie-and-dye fabrics produced by inmates, Adum Mineral Water, Peak milk, toilet rolls, biscuits, toothbrushes, soaps, slippers, popcorn, Cornelly, and detergents.
Mrs. Mabel Amponsah, Manageress of the Kumasi Central Prison, praised the programme, saying it supports the welfare of children and fosters inclusion of both inmates and discharged convicts.
The Municipal Chief Executive of Asokore Mampong, Hon. Ben Abdallah Alhassan, who attended the event, commended the prison authorities for their social responsibility. He donated GH¢1,100 to the inmates and assured of his continuous support to the children’s home.
“This is a true demonstration of service to humanity, and I call on companies and individuals to follow this example,” the MCE stated.
The Kumasi Central Prison has lined up similar community-driven activities throughout the year as part of its “Think Prison 360 Degrees” project.
