Otumfuo Bans Funerals Ahead of Asantehemaa’s Burial

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has announced a ban on all funeral activities in the Ashanti Kingdom effective September 1, 2025, ahead of the final burial rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.
The ban will remain in force until the conclusion of the burial service, which is scheduled to take place from September 14 to September 18, 2025.
Making the announcement on behalf of the Asantehene, Otumfuo’s linguist, Baffour Kantankrankyi, explained that the directive is to allow the King and the people of Asanteman to focus fully on the traditional rites and honor the late Queen Mother without any distractions.
The decision follows the Asantehene’s formal announcement of the Asantehemaa’s passing to the Asanteman Council on August 11, 2025.
In preparation for the ceremonies, the Asanteman Council has issued strict guidelines for the one-week observation. Sympathizers are expected to dress modestly and respectfully, with indecent dressing, high-heeled shoes, and long artificial nails strictly prohibited. The council stressed that the measures are intended to preserve the dignity and cultural sanctity of the occasion.
The one-week observation and final funeral rites are expected to attract dignitaries, chiefs, and mourners from across Ghana and beyond. Security will be heavily enforced at the Manhyia Palace throughout the ceremonies, which will showcase the rich traditions and customs of the Ashanti Kingdom.
Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who reigned as Asantehemaa for eight years, is remembered for her motherly role, wisdom, and dedication to the welfare of her people.
