Former President Kufuor, Dignitaries Join One-Week Observation of Asantehemaa
The forecourt of the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi was filled with grief and tradition on Thursday as thousands gathered to mark the one-week observation of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor led a host of high-profile personalities who joined the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the people of Asanteman to mourn the passing of the Queen Mother.
Other dignitaries in attendance included former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his wife, Rebecca Akufo-Addo; Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his wife, Samira Bawumia; Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong; Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene; and Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Boadi, among many others.
Clad in black and red, mourners from across the country thronged the palace grounds to pay their respects to the late Queen Mother, who reigned for eight years until her passing.
The solemn ceremony, steeped in Akan tradition, featured drumming, dirges, and rich displays of Ashanti culture. Chiefs, queen mothers, clergy, and citizens from all walks of life were present to show solidarity with the Asantehene, who is mourning his sister.
In his tribute, former President Kufuor described Nana Konadu Yiadom III as a “pillar of wisdom and guidance,” whose leadership and counsel greatly strengthened the Ashanti Kingdom.
Security was heightened, with a heavy police presence ensuring order and safety as dignitaries and mourners flooded the palace.
The one-week observation marks the beginning of a series of traditional rites that will culminate in the final funeral ceremonies, scheduled from September 14 to September 18, 2025.
