Preparations Intensify for One-Week Observation of Late Asantehemaa

The Ashanti Kingdom is awash with grief as preparations reach fever pitch for the one-week observation of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, whose passing marks the end of an era in Asanteman’s history.

A visit by the SWIFTNEWS3.COM to the Manhyia Palace on Tuesday revealed a solemn yet industrious scene. Dozens of workers, artisans, and volunteers were busily putting the final touches to the Palace grounds ahead of the solemn event. The tall shade trees along the Palace walls have been wrapped in red and black fabric — the traditional colours of mourning in Ashanti culture — sending a clear visual message to all who pass: a mighty tree has fallen.

The one-week observation, set for Thursday, August 21, 2025, will take place at the forecourt of the Manhyia Palace. The ceremony is expected to draw mourners from all walks of life, including traditional leaders, politicians, business executives, and diplomats from Ghana and beyond. High-ranking chiefs and royals from across the Ashanti Region will be joined by guests from other parts of the country and the diaspora to pay their respects and express solidarity with His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who reigned as Queen Mother for eight years, is remembered not only for her royal dignity but also for her warmth, humility, and wisdom. Throughout her tenure, she was regarded as a mother to all, a unifier who worked tirelessly to ensure peace and harmony in Asanteman. Palace insiders recall her steady counsel to the Asantehene on matters affecting the kingdom and her quiet yet influential role in settling disputes within the traditional area.

“She was the glue that kept us together,” one elder at Manhyia remarked with visible emotion. “Her love for her people and her commitment to unity will never be forgotten.”

In Ashanti tradition, the one-week observation is not just a ritual marker of time; it is a communal expression of grief, solidarity, and respect. The event serves as an opportunity for the entire kingdom — and well-wishers beyond its borders — to gather, mourn, and celebrate the life and legacy of the departed leader.

The passing of Nana Konadu Yiadom III has plunged the Palace into deep mourning. Black and red fabrics now adorn not only the Palace but also surrounding streets, while the mood in Kumasi reflects a collective sense of loss. For many, the Queen Mother’s death feels personal — a loss felt in homes, marketplaces, and gatherings across the region.

As the day of the observation draws near, all eyes will turn to Manhyia Palace, where the people of Ashanti will unite once again — this time not in celebration, but in a shared moment of farewell to the woman who was, in many ways, the heart of Asanteman.
