GIBA Urges Journalists to Lead Fight Against Illicit Financial Flows

The Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Isaac Frimpong, has called on journalists to take a more active role in exposing illicit financial flows and promoting fiscal justice in Ghana.

Speaking at a sensitisation workshop on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Sunset Hotel in Kumasi, Mr. Frimpong commended the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) for launching its Media Guide on Illicit Financial Flows, Progressive Taxation, and Domestic Resource Mobilisation.

He described the guide as a timely and strategic tool for the media, stressing that journalists are not only storytellers but “custodians of public accountability.”

“Illicit financial flows and weak domestic revenue mobilisation undermine our nation’s ability to deliver quality services, build infrastructure, and invest in the future of our people,” he said. “Our role in highlighting these issues goes beyond headlines; it’s about shaping a more informed, engaged, and empowered citizenry.”

Mr. Frimpong urged editors and reporters to use the guide to simplify complex fiscal topics, hold duty bearers accountable, and connect policy discussions to the daily realities of citizens.

“In a time where misinformation travels faster than truth, accurate, context-rich, and impactful reporting is our strongest weapon,” he added, encouraging journalists to “ask tougher questions, follow the money, and keep the conversation alive long after today.”

He expressed appreciation to MFWA, OXFAM, and other partners for their role in promoting fiscal transparency and accountability, noting that the media’s commitment could make fiscal justice a cause that “resonates, educates, and inspires change.”
