Sand Winning Ravages Farmlands in Mpasatia — Farmer Cries for Help

Illegal sand winning activities are wreaking havoc on farmlands in Mpasatia, leaving farmers devastated and the community’s agricultural future in jeopardy.
Mr. Kwame Gruma, a local farmer, says his rice farm and other crops have been destroyed, with vast portions of arable land stripped of fertile soil. He also reported the loss of palm trees, cassava, maize, and other staples due to the destructive operations.
A visit by the SWIFTNEWS3.COM his farm confirmed the extensive damage — rice fields flattened, topsoil scooped away, and deep pits scattered across the land.
“This is the worst I’ve seen in my lifetime. Our soils are disappearing, our crops are gone, and our livelihoods are on the line,” Mr. Gruma lamented.
He is appealing to the Mpasatia Traditional Council and local authorities to urgently stop the practice before the community’s food production and economy collapse.
Residents warn that the environmental impact — including land degradation, loss of vegetation, and potential flooding — could have lasting effects on future generations if no action is taken.
