Kotoko to Face Kwara United in CAF Confederation Cup Opener

Asante Kotoko will begin their 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup campaign with a first preliminary round clash against Nigeria’s Kwara United, following Saturday’s draw in Cairo.

The Kumasi-based club, making their first appearance in the competition since 2022, will be looking to start strongly in their quest for continental success. The Porcupine Warriors will host the first leg at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium between September 19 and 21, before travelling to Nigeria for the return encounter from September 26 to 28.

Kwara United booked their place in the tournament after lifting the President’s Federation Cup for the first time in their history, defeating Abakaliki FC 4-3 on penalties following a goalless draw in the final.

Should Kotoko progress, they will meet Moroccan powerhouse Wydad Casablanca in the second preliminary round. The North African giants, who have multiple CAF Champions League titles to their name, will join the competition at that stage.

The second preliminary round ties are scheduled for late September and early October, with the aggregate winners advancing to the lucrative group stage of Africa’s second-tier club competition.
