FDA Shuts Down Production of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix Over Safety Concerns

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has halted the production of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix, citing serious health and safety violations at the manufacturing facility of Nutrifoods Ghana Limited.

The immediate suspension comes in the wake of an earlier nationwide recall of all canned versions of the tomato mix, as well as specific batches in 380g and 1.05kg pouch formats.

According to an official statement released by the FDA on Sunday, August 3, the decision follows multiple consumer complaints and a subsequent investigation that revealed troubling lapses in Nutrifoods’ production standards.

Contamination and Faulty Packaging

The FDA’s inspection uncovered significant breaches, including poor maintenance of critical machinery and the absence of robust quality monitoring systems. Notably, faulty sealing mechanisms in canned products allowed contamination, with some units reportedly bloated or showing visible mould—posing a direct threat to consumer health.

“These breaches present unacceptable risks to public health,” the FDA stressed. “We have acted swiftly to suspend production and ensure the immediate removal of affected products from the market.”

Repeat Offender

In a surprising revelation, the FDA confirmed that Nutrifoods had previously been restricted from producing the tomato mix in January 2025 due to similar issues. The recurrence of violations has raised concerns about the company’s commitment to regulatory compliance and the robustness of enforcement mechanisms.

The FDA also announced an internal probe to assess whether regulatory lapses contributed to the situation.

“We are committed to transparency and accountability. If any shortcomings are identified within our systems, we will take swift action to strengthen our oversight,” the statement said.

Consumer Action and Recall Instructions

Retailers, wholesalers, and consumers are being urged to immediately cease distribution or use of the recalled products. Customers in possession of the affected items are advised to return them to their point of purchase and report any adverse reactions to the FDA.

Nutrifoods Ghana Limited has confirmed its cooperation with the directive and is recalling the specified products.

Public Health First

This development is likely to spark debate around food safety enforcement and corporate accountability in Ghana’s food manufacturing sector.

The FDA has assured the public of its commitment to protect health and uphold the highest food safety standards.
