DDE Urges Promotion of English and Twi Literacy

The District Director of Education (DDE) for Atwima Kwanwoma, Mrs. Doris Ofori, has called for a stronger commitment to promoting literacy in both English and Twi among students to preserve culture and enhance global competitiveness.
Speaking at the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation Community Reading Competition held at the Trede Chief’s Palace on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Mrs. Ofori described reading as “a gateway to understanding, a bridge between cultures, and a path to endless possibilities.”
According to her, English, being a global language, provides access to knowledge, research, and opportunities worldwide, while Twi connects students to their roots, traditions, and identity.
“Promoting Twi literacy not only helps preserve our traditions and values but also strengthens our students’ sense of identity,” she said. “Through English, our learners can access global narratives, while Twi keeps them grounded in the beauty of our cultural heritage.”
The competition, organized under the auspices of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation, brought together students, teachers, traditional leaders, and education stakeholders within the municipality.
Mrs. Ofori commended the organizers and encouraged participants to approach the competition with confidence, urging all stakeholders to ensure a fair and transparent event.
“Let us create a conducive atmosphere for our learners to feel at home and compete without fear,” she added.
The event was attended by the District Chief Executive (DCE), traditional authorities, education officers, and a panel of judges tasked with selecting the best contestants to represent the municipality in the regional stages of the competition.
