Asanko Gold Refutes Claims of Military Intimidation in Tontokrom

Mining firm Asanko Gold Ghana Ltd. has denied allegations that it brought military personnel into the Tontokrom community to harass and intimidate residents.

The company’s response follows a press conference held by some community members on Saturday, July 26, 2025, during which they accused Asanko Gold of using the military to create fear among locals amid ongoing tensions over mining activities.

In a statement released on Monday, July 28, Asanko Gold described the claims as “false and misleading,” clarifying that the military presence in the area is part of a national security initiative led by the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Chamber of Mines to protect legal mining concessions from illegal mining activities.

“The deployment is not punitive and is not aimed at intimidating anyone,” said Charles Amoah, EVP and Managing Director of Asanko Gold. “It is a lawful intervention designed to safeguard lives, the environment, and legal mining operations.”

The company noted that prior to the military deployment, stakeholder engagements were held with local authorities and traditional leaders under the guidance of the District Security Councils (DISEC) of Amansie South and Amansie West.

Asanko Gold emphasized that similar security operations across other mining areas have seen voluntary compliance by illegal miners, and expressed hope for the same cooperation in Tontokrom.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to open dialogue, community development, and peaceful coexistence. It urged the public to disregard the misinformation and pledged to continue working with all stakeholders to promote responsible mining.
