15 Saviour Church Youth Members Die in Gory Crash on Kumasi-Accra Highway

Obogu plunged into mourning as head pastor loses two children in Monday’s tragedy
At least 15 members of the Saviour Church of Ghana, mostly youth, have been confirmed dead following a horrific road accident on the Atwedie section of the Kumasi-Accra highway on Monday, July 28, 2025.
The heartbreaking incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. and involved a head-on collision between a Ford Transit bus carrying the church’s youth group and a fuel tanker traveling from Kumasi towards Accra.
Eyewitnesses say the tanker burst a tyre while overtaking another vehicle and lost control, crashing directly into the oncoming church vehicle.
The youth were returning from a church retreat held in Koforidua over the weekend. According to church elder Mr. Kofi Baah, the victims were all members of the Obogu branch youth ministry.
“We were at home waiting for their return when the distress call came. We rushed to the Juaso Government Hospital only to see the bodies lined up. Some families have lost two or even three children. Among the dead are the two children of our head pastor,” Mr. Baah told Adom News.
Hospital sources confirm that 15 bodies have been deposited at the Juaso mortuary, while four others remain in critical condition at the emergency unit.
The victims, aged between 4 and 21, were reportedly excited about the trip, which was meant to strengthen their spiritual growth.
Emergency teams from the Ghana National Fire Service, MTTD, and Ambulance Service from Juaso and Konongo were at the scene to provide aid and transport victims to the hospital.
The Obogu community has been thrown into deep sorrow, with many residents and church members struggling to come to terms with the magnitude of the loss. Worship activities in the town have been suspended, and a prayer vigil is being planned in honour of the deceased.
Meanwhile, police say investigations have commenced to determine the exact cause of the crash.
This tragic incident adds to growing concerns about road safety on Ghana’s highways, especially involving heavy-duty vehicles. Many are calling on authorities to implement stricter safety measures and review driving practices to prevent such devastating accidents.
