SSNIT Reaffirms Commitment to Pensioners at 2025 Engagement

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding the dignity and welfare of pensioners across Ghana.
At the 2025 Pensioners’ Engagement held in Kumasi, the Director-General of SSNIT, Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, assured retirees that the Trust remains financially strong and fully capable of meeting all its obligations.
The event, themed “Honouring Experience, Securing Dignity of Pensioners – The Role of SSNIT,” brought together leaders of the National Pensioners Association (NPA), senior citizens, and SSNIT management to discuss welfare, transparency, and the sustainability of the pension scheme.
GH¢ 5.77 Billion Paid in 2024
Highlighting SSNIT’s performance, Mr. Biney revealed that the Trust paid over GH¢ 5.77 billion in pensions to more than 253,000 retirees in 2024. In just the first half of 2025, over GH¢ 3.33 billion has already been paid to over 257,000 pensioners.
“These payments mean food on your table, medicines for your health, and peace of mind at home. They are proof of our commitment to protecting the dignity of those who built this nation,” he said.
Digital Transformation for Better Service
SSNIT has introduced SMS alerts to notify pensioners when payments are made, as part of efforts to improve transparency and convenience. The Trust is also working to expand its service reach through 53 branches nationwide and co-location points at selected banks.
Mr. Biney announced plans to launch a 24/7 Virtual Branch, enabling retirees to access SSNIT services anytime through mobile devices or the internet.
Digital solutions, including the SSNIT Self-Service Portal and Mobile App, allow pensioners to:
View payslips and payment history
Renew life certificates using facial recognition
Access records remotely
“For pensioners with mobility challenges, SSNIT continues to schedule home visits to ensure no one is left behind,” he added.
Healthcare Support for Retirees
Addressing health concerns, Mr. Biney revealed that SSNIT is partnering with the Mahama Care Programme to support retirees with chronic conditions. The Trust is also planning to roll out a telemedicine service by the end of the year to extend medical advice to pensioners in areas with limited healthcare access.
During the engagement, medical teams from Inkoom Hospital in Accra provided free health screenings, including blood pressure checks, blood sugar tests, temperature checks, and weight assessments.
SSNIT at 60
Mr. Biney announced that SSNIT will launch activities to commemorate 60 years of social security in Ghana. He emphasized that the Trust’s digital transformation efforts are aimed at improving transparency, efficiency, and convenience for pensioners.
“We value your feedback, experiences, and expectations. A pension scheme is only as strong as the trust it earns from its members,” he noted.
NPA Applauds SSNIT
On behalf of the NPA’s General Secretary, Mr. Stephen Boakye, the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Nana Adarkwah Tuffour, praised SSNIT for its open engagement with pensioners.
“Such engagements are not just symbolic; they create opportunities for mutual understanding, collaboration, and transparency,” Nana Tuffour said.
He commended SSNIT for its consistent pension payments and health screening initiatives, urging the Trust to maintain strong communication and protect the scheme for future generations.
He also encouraged pensioners to become advocates for the SSNIT scheme by encouraging self-employed workers to join.
The 2025 Pensioners’ Engagement reinforced SSNIT’s commitment to not only paying pensions promptly but also ensuring the well-being, dignity, and independence of Ghana’s retirees.
