IGP Deploys Special Team to Investigate Assassination of Kusasi Chief in Asawase

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has dispatched a special investigative team to uncover the circumstances surrounding the killing of Abdul-Malik Azenbe, the Kusasi chief of the Ashanti Region and Kaadi Divisional Area chief in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region.

Chief Azenbe was shot and killed on Tuesday, July 22, in Asawase in what authorities believe was a targeted attack. Police reports indicate that the assailants, riding on separate motorbikes, approached the chief at close range and opened fire before fleeing.

The chief was rushed to the Manhyia District Hospital and later transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His body has been deposited at the Ebenezer Mortuary in Tafo for autopsy.

Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, visited the bereaved family and assured them that the police are determined to bring the killers to justice.

“We have already launched investigations, and I assure you that we will hunt down the suspects,” DCOP Teye-Cudjoe stated.

He confirmed that all official protocols had been completed and the chief’s body would soon be released for burial.

DCOP Teye-Cudjoe, together with the regional crime officer, ACP Ebenezer Boyor, led a team of officers to the scene, where two spent AK-47 shells were retrieved as evidence.

The police have condemned the act as a “heinous crime” and urged the public, especiallyresidents of Asawase, to remain calm and provide any information that may assist in the investigations.

The police commander also appealed to the media to be cautious and respectful in their coverage to allow the family time to grieve.
