Ashanti Zongo Peace Committee Condemns Killing of Chief Abdul-Malik Azenbe

The Ashanti Regional Zongo Peace and Reconciliation Committee has strongly condemned the tragic shooting and killing of Chief Abdul-Malik Azenbe, the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region, at his residence at Asawasi F-Line near the community center.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the committee expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the Kusasi community, and the entire Zongo fraternity.
“This act of violence is not only regrettable but also a threat to the peace and security we all strive to maintain,” the statement noted.
The committee called on the public to remain calm and allow the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to conduct thorough investigations into the killing. It further urged the public to avoid drawing premature conclusions or linking the incident to ethnic tensions, as no evidence currently supports such claims.
Sheikh Muhammad Ridwan, Chairman of the committee, encouraged the police to “act swiftly and professionally to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore public confidence.”
The Peace Committee highlighted challenges affecting its operations, particularly the lack of adequate logistics and resources, which it believes have hindered timely interventions in conflict situations. “Our efforts have been greatly hampered by the lack of adequate support. With proper resources, early intervention could have been possible in this situation,” the statement added.
The committee revealed that it had recently engaged with two feuding factions at the regional level, following a directive from the Ashanti Regional Imam, as part of proactive measures to promote peace and dialogue.
The statement concluded with a call for collective responsibility, urging government, civil society organizations, and stakeholders to strengthen peacebuilding efforts across the region.
“Peace is a shared responsibility. Let us all work together to preserve it,” Sheikh Ridwan emphasized.
