Ashanti NPA Chair Urges Stronger Pensioner-SSNIT Collaboration

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Pensioners Association (NPA), Nana Adarkwah Tuffour, has praised the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) for its continued commitment to fostering open dialogue and improving the welfare of pensioners in Ghana.

Speaking on behalf of the NPA’s General Secretary, Mr. Stephen Boakye, during the 2025 Pensioners’ Engagement in Kumasi, Nana Tuffour described the initiative as “a welcome affirmation that SSNIT values its stakeholders and the lives of retirees across the country.”

The event, held under the theme “Honouring Experience, Securing Dignity – The Role of SSNIT,” brought together pensioners from the region to engage SSNIT management on issues of welfare, transparency, and the sustainability of the national pension scheme.

“Such engagements are not just symbolic; they create opportunities for mutual understanding, collaboration and transparency,” Nana Tuffour said. “It is not common for institutions to look beyond the financial obligations they owe and show a genuine interest in the people who depend on them. SSNIT’s posture strengthens the entire concept of social security in Ghana.”

He commended SSNIT for the consistency in the payment of pensions, which he described as a critical priority for retirees, while stressing the need for continuous improvements in transparency and communication. “Beyond receiving our pensions every month, we also want to be heard. We seek reassurance that the system will remain strong and reliable for future generations,” he noted.

Nana Tuffour also lauded SSNIT for its health screening programs for pensioners, which were successfully organized last year and again this year. “This effort demonstrates SSNIT’s understanding of the bigger picture of wellbeing and dignity,” he said, urging the Trust to sustain its commitment to the welfare of retirees.

He encouraged pensioners to actively participate in discussions and become advocates for the SSNIT scheme, especially by encouraging self-employed workers to enroll.

“To SSNIT, we say thank you, but we also challenge you to stay the course, guard the fund, communicate often, and never lose sight of the people at the heart of your work,” he concluded.

The 2025 Pensioners’ Engagement, attended by the Director-General of SSNIT, Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, emphasized the importance of safeguarding the future of Ghana’s social security system while honouring the invaluable contributions of the country’s senior citizens.
