Paul Yandoh Questions Pattern in NPP MP Deaths

The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Paul Kwabena Yandoh, has made remarks that have generated considerable public reaction, following comments he made regarding the recent spate of deaths involving NPP Members of Parliament (MPs).
During an appearance on a morning show hosted by Oheneba Asiedu on Wontumi FM in Kumasi on Friday, July 10, Mr. Yandoh questioned why, in his view, only MPs from the NPP have passed away in recent years, while no similar incidents have been recorded among MPs from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“It is strange that only our MPs are dying. Why are none of the NDC MPs experiencing this?” he asked.
The host, visibly uncomfortable with the comment, immediately called on Mr. Yandoh to retract his statement, describing it as inappropriate and capable of fuelling unnecessary speculation. Mr. Yandoh, however, declined to withdraw his comments and instead suggested that the party leadership should examine possible causes of what he termed the “sudden and unexplained” pattern of losses within the party.
In recent years, the NPP has experienced the deaths of four sitting MPs. The most recent was the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, who passed away on 7th July 2025. In 2024, Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah, the MP for Ejisu, also died while serving in office.
In 2023, the party mourned the death of Philip Basoah, MP for Kumawu, while in 2020, Ekow Kwansah Hayford, MP for Mfantseman, was tragically killed.
