Sports Minister Meets Otumfuo to Push for Revival of Sports Infrastructure in Ashanti Region

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, has met with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to seek his support and counsel as the government takes steps to revive major sports infrastructure in the Ashanti Region.
The courtesy call on the Asantehene, held at the Manhyia Palace, followed the Minister’s visit to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and the long-abandoned Nyinahini Sports Complex—two key facilities identified for urgent attention.
Hon. Adams, who was accompanied by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, and top officials from the National Sports Authority, briefed Otumfuo on findings from the inspection tour. He explained that the visit was part of a broader assignment from the President aimed at revitalising Ghana’s sports infrastructure, beginning with critical projects in the Ashanti Region.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed deep concern over the current state of sports infrastructure and pledged his full support to the Ministry’s efforts. He emphasized the need for unity, collaboration, and a long-term vision to drive real progress in sports development.
“I fully support this initiative. Sports has the power to shape character, bring communities together, and create opportunities for our youth,” Otumfuo said during the meeting.
Hon. Kofi Adams described the engagement as encouraging and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to delivering tangible results. “With Otumfuo’s guidance and support, we are confident that we can restore Ashanti’s legacy in sports and lay a solid foundation for future generations,” he said.
The Minister also highlighted the broader impact of sports infrastructure, noting that improved facilities can boost youth participation in sports, enhance talent development, and contribute to the local economy.
The meeting at the Manhyia Palace is being viewed as a significant step towards addressing longstanding challenges facing sports infrastructure in the region. It reflects the government’s renewed focus on leveraging sports as a tool for national development—starting from one of Ghana’s most influential traditional regions.
Efforts are now underway to mobilize the necessary resources and stakeholders to kick-start rehabilitation works and ensure the projects are completed and put to effective use.
