Gov’t Launches Key Energy Project to Boost Power Supply in Ashanti Region

The government has officially broken ground for the construction of a new 161kV transmission line between Anwomaso and Kumasi, a major infrastructure project aimed at enhancing the reliability and efficiency of power delivery in the Ashanti Region.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, forms part of a broader national plan to modernize Ghana’s power grid and ensure stable electricity supply for both homes and industries.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, described the project as a crucial step toward building a resilient and future-proof energy system. He noted that the new transmission line will strengthen power evacuation capacity, stabilize voltage in the region, and significantly reduce technical losses on the grid.

“This is more than just laying wires and towers. It’s a strategic move to deepen energy access, promote industrial growth, and position Ghana as a regional energy leader,” the Minister stated.

The project is a joint effort between the Government of Ghana and key international partners, including the European Union and Agence Française de Développement (AFD). Once completed, it is expected to reinforce the Anwomaso Power Enclave, transforming it into a major hub for power generation and distribution.

Hon. Jinapor outlined several key priorities under the government’s energy agenda, such as the integration of smart technologies, expansion of gas-to-power infrastructure, promotion of private sector investment, and enhancement of transparency in tariff structures.

He also emphasized that strengthening the national grid is critical to achieving inclusive growth, energy equity, and environmental sustainability.

The government expressed deep appreciation to the European Union and AFD for their ongoing support in the country’s energy transition efforts.

The Anwomaso-Kumasi transmission project marks another milestone in Ghana’s commitment to delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity across the country.
